Non-US citizens generally must first obtain a visa to travel to the United States. The type of visa you must have is defined by immigration law, and relates to the purpose of your travel.
The United States runs a so-called Visa Waiver Program, which enables nationals of certain countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business [visitor (B) visa purposes] for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

Please note that as of January 12th, 2009 all travellers within the Visa Waiver Program need to apply for an ESTA permission (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). The ESTA will electronically collect your travel data before point of entry (once granted the ESTA permission is valid up to two years) and issue a registration number you need to enter the United States. Please apply for your ESTA when registering for the TRI*M Conference right away.
